Dojo Kun
The Dojo Kun is a Japanese term meaning Dojo (training hall) rules. Generally posted at the Dojo entrance or at its front (shomen), the Dojo Kun outline expected and disallowed behaviour.
They are as follows:
1. Hitotsu Jinkaku Kansei Ni Tsutomuru Koto
Try to perfect continuously your personality!
2. Hitotsu Makoto No Michi O Mamoru Koto
Be continuously sincere in your behaviour!
3. Hitotsu Doryoku No Seichin O Yashinau Koto
Face efforts & sacrifices with an invincible spirit!
4. Hitotsu Reigi O Omonzuru Koto
Have always a correct and respectable behaviour!
5. Hitotsu Kekki No Yu O Imashimuru Koto
Never let go to anger and passion!
Shoto Njyukkun
These are 20 fundamental points to the spirit of Karate-Do taught by Sensei Gichin Funakoshi.
1.Karate begins and ends with a bow.
2. Karate is not a means of offending or damaging.
"Karate Ni Sente Nashi"
3. Karate is rectitude & gratitude.
4. Karate means to understand ourselves and others.
5. In Karate spirit comes before action.
6. Karate is loyalty, fairness & spontaneity.
7. Karate teaches that difficulties come when one gives up.
8. Karate has not to live only in the Dojo.
9. Karate is the rule for the whole life.
10. The Karate spirit must be present in all actions.
11. The Karate must burn in the fire of the soul.
12. Karate is not to win, but the ideal is not to lose.
13. The spirit must be different fo each opponent.
14. Concentration & relaxation must be used in the right moment.
15. Hands and feet are swords.
16. Think that everyone is your opponent.
17. A Karateka remains always in the the guard position ("Kamae"), the natural position ("Shizentai") is for the highest level.
18. The Kata is the perfection of the style: the application is another thing.
19. Like the bow, the Karateka must have contraction, expansion, velocity, and in simultanuous harmony, relaxation, concentration, slowness.
20. The spirit must always search for the highest level.
